Here you will find the most important answers to your questions about periodontitis.

The most common symptoms include bleeding gums, reddened or swollen gums, bad breath, receding gums and, in advanced cases, loosened teeth. Periodontitis is often painless for a long time and therefore often remains undetected.

Periodontitis is usually caused by bacterial plaque. Risk factors include poor oral hygiene, smoking, genetic predisposition, stress, diabetes and certain general illnesses. Without timely treatment, it leads to inflammation and degradation of the periodontium.

The first step is a professional tooth cleaning to remove all plaque and bacteria. Any inflamed gum pockets are then cleaned. In many cases, conservative therapy is sufficient, but surgical measures or laser therapy can also be used if necessary.

In most cases, statutory health insurance covers the costs of basic treatment for periodontitis. However, special services such as laser therapy are usually considered a private service and are not covered.

How does periodontitis manifest itself?

The biggest problem with periodontitis is that it often causes no pain and goes unnoticed for a long time. At the beginning, "periodontitis" is only noticeable through slightly reddened gums, which tend to bleed or irritate easily when brushing teeth. Inflamed gum pockets then form and the gingiva on the tooth recedes. Periodontitis is often only discovered when a tooth has already become loose.

How can periodontitis be prevented?

Alongside tooth decay, periodontitis is the most common cause of premature tooth loss. This is why consistent and regular check-ups at the dentist and regular professional teeth cleaning are essential. The earlier gum inflammation is detected and treated, the better the disease can be stopped or cured completely. Our prophylaxis team therefore offers you a convenient recall service to support your preventive dental care.

How is periodontitis treated?

The treatment of periodontitis is extremely important for general health, as the inflammatory disease is also associated with internal diseases such as endocarditis, heart attacks and diabetes. Periodontitis can further worsen blood sugar levels. Existing diabetes, in turn, can further promote periodontitis. Gum inflammation is treated in several stages and aims to reduce the inflammation of the gum pockets:

A gentle and modern option is laser therapy, with which we achieve very good results at our dental practice in Berlin Mitte. First, the dentist introduces a dye into the gum pockets, which colors bacterial plaque and tartar - the actual triggers of periodontitis. Irradiation with the laser then serves to activate the dye without damaging the gums. The gum pockets can then be treated further using ultrasound. Laser therapy has the further advantage that far fewer germs and bacteria can enter the bloodstream in the event of subsequent laser surgery.

Another option for laser therapy is periodontal surgery. Infected gum tissue is gently removed with a highly focused beam of light. The high heat effect of the laser closes the wound immediately and prevents post-operative bleeding.

The high vibrations of the ultrasound effortlessly remove tartar and plaque, even in hard-to-reach areas such as between the teeth or even under the gum line. In this way, the teeth are cleaned more efficiently and gently than would be possible with conventional manual instruments (curettage).
