Do you treat patients with anxiety?
Yes—at Professor Olze und Kollegen MVZ GmbH in Berlin Mitte, people with dental anxiety are in good hands. We take our time and don’t judge, even if your last visit to the dentist was many years ago.
Fear of the dentist is very common. According to the AOK health magazine, 60 to 80 percent of the population feels anxious before a dental visit, and about five percent suffer from a pathological fear of dentists. So you’re not alone, and you don’t have to justify yourself.

What exactly are you afraid of?
Fear of the dentist takes many forms. The more we understand what’s troubling you, the more effectively we can help.
Pain and Injections
The worry that it will hurt, or the fear of the shot itself.
Loss of control
The feeling of being at the mercy of the chair and not knowing what's going to happen next.
Noises and the gag reflex
The sound of the drill, the smell of the dentist's office, the gag reflex when instruments are in my mouth.
Shame
The fear that the condition of one's teeth will be judged, and the hurdle of even making the call.
How to Recognize Dental Phobia
According to the AOK health magazine, dental phobia is likely present if all three of the following apply:
- The fear goes beyond the actual danger.
- It lasts longer than six months.
- Your teeth or gums will suffer permanent damage because you can't go to the dentist.
This is not a substitute for a diagnosis.
Fear Is Allowed to Remain
No one has to “get rid of” their anxiety in order to receive treatment from us. The goal is for you to be able to resume the necessary treatment without letting your anxiety dictate your actions.
We do not guarantee that the fear will go away.
You don't have to decide anything just yet.
Please let us know if you're feeling anxious. We'll then set aside more time and take the time to discuss what needs to be done.
Options
What Can Help Ease Dental Anxiety During Treatment?
Depending on your anxiety and the treatment, there are various options to consider. We'll discuss which one is right for you before the first procedure.
They're awake and in controlYou're asleep
-
Conversation and Stop Signal
We explain each step in advance. We'll stop immediately when you give the agreed-upon hand signal.
A good choice ifyou primarily need control and information.
-
Gentle Local Anesthesia
We numb the specific area before we begin.
This is a good option ifyour fear is primarily related to pain.
-
Twilight Sleep
You will be deeply relaxed and will barely notice the treatment. Sedation is administered intravenously and is performed by our certified dentists.
This is a good option whenanxiety is severe or treatment takes longer.
-
General Anesthesia (Intubation Anesthesia)
You will be asleep during the procedure. An external anesthesiologist will oversee the anesthesia in cooperation with us.
This is a good option whenanxiety is very high or major procedures are scheduled.
We do not offer nitrous oxide.
What is twilight sleep at the dentist?
Twilight sleep is a form of intravenous sedation: You are deeply relaxed, the treatment area is specifically numbed, and you usually remember very little of it.
At our practice, sedation is administered by dentists who are certified in dental intravenous sedation: Dr. Juliane Jager, MSc., Dr. Karsten Wittig, and dental assistant Moritz Weiler. They received their certification from the Dr. Mathers Institute, Institute for Dental Sedation, in Cologne.
From a technical standpoint, twilight sleep is distinct from general anesthesia: Under general anesthesia, consciousness is completely suppressed.
Important to Know
- First, there will be an initial consultation and a review of your medical history.
- After the procedure, you will remain under observation until you wake up.
- An escort is required for the trip home.
- On the day of your treatment, you will not be driving yourself.
What happens during the first visit?
The first appointment is a consultation, not a treatment. After that, you decide how to proceed.
Contact Without a Phone Call
Please contact us via WhatsApp or email. Let us know that you're anxious so we can set aside more time for you.
Introductory Meeting
We'll talk calmly about your experiences and wishes. There will be no examination unless you want one.
Analysis and Plan
We only assess what is necessary and create a clear treatment plan that outlines the steps and costs. You decide what happens and when.
Treatment with a Stop Signal
We'll explain each step beforehand. If you signal with your hand, we'll stop immediately. We can use twilight sleep or general anesthesia if needed.
Follow-up Care and Next Appointment
We'll check in with you to see how you're doing and agree on the next step right away so that nothing falls by the wayside.
How much does treatment cost for patients with dental anxiety?
The cost depends on the treatment and whether sedation or anesthesia is required. For more extensive treatments, you will receive a transparent treatment and cost plan in advance.
Whether a public health insurance plan covers the costs of sedation depends on the individual case and medical necessity. Please check with your insurance provider in advance.
What if it's been a long time since your last dental visit?
It's never too late. Many patients don't come in until years later, and we don't judge the condition of your teeth. We look ahead and plan step by step.
Completely renovated
If multiple areas need to be treated, we'll plan the order so that you have as few appointments as possible.
Teeth Grinding and Jaw Pain
Tension and anxiety often manifest in the jaw. We determine whether a functional disorder is a factor.
Gentle Methods
Whenever medically appropriate, we use the least invasive procedures possible.
What do other patients with anxiety say?

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Anxiety
Do you treat patients with anxiety in Berlin Mitte?
Yes. At Professor Olze und Kollegen MVZ GmbH in Berlin Mitte, people with dental anxiety are in good hands, even if they haven’t visited a dentist in many years. All of the dentists at the practice treat anxious patients. You can see our team further up on this page. We specialize in treating adults.
Do I need to call to make an appointment?
No. You can reach us via WhatsApp or email. If you'd rather call, please call us at 030 – 20613869-0.
Can I just talk to someone for now, without receiving treatment?
Yes, that's the idea behind the first appointment: a consultation rather than treatment.
What is a twilight sleep?
Twilight sedation is a form of intravenous sedation: You are deeply relaxed and barely aware of the treatment, but you do not lose consciousness completely, as you would with general anesthesia. At our practice, sedation is administered by dentists who are certified in dental intravenous sedation.
Do you offer nitrous oxide?
No. We do not offer nitrous oxide. Alternatives include counseling, mild sedation, twilight sleep, and, if necessary, general anesthesia.
Do you offer general anesthesia?
Yes. In collaboration with an external anesthesiologist, we offer treatments under intubation anesthesia (ITN). We will discuss in advance whether this is an option for you.
How much does a twilight sleep cost?
The cost depends on the duration, medications, and scope of the treatment. Before a scheduled twilight sedation, you will receive a written cost estimate.
Does health insurance cover the costs?
That depends on the specific case and medical necessity. Please check with your health insurance provider before undergoing treatment.
I haven't been to the dentist in many years. Is it too late now?
No. You don't have to explain yourself. We'll start where you are and plan the next steps together.
How do I stop the treatment if I start to panic?
We'll agree on a hand signal in advance. As soon as you give it, we'll stop. Then we'll decide together whether you need a break or if we should continue another day.
Do you also treat children who are afraid of the dentist?
We do not specialize in treating children. Children can quickly develop a fear of the dentist if they are not treated by dentists who specialize in pediatric dentistry. We do not want to contribute to the development of such fears. Our practice therefore focuses on adults. Of course, we will treat children in an emergency.
