A Quick Explanation

Do you treat patients with anxiety?

Yes—at Professor Olze and Colleagues MVZ GmbH in Berlin Mitte, people with dental anxiety are in good hands. We take our time and don’t judge, even if your last visit to the dentist was many years ago.

Fear of the dentist is very common. According to the AOK health magazine, 60 to 80 percent of the population feels anxiety before a visit to the dentist, and about five percent suffer from a pathological dental phobia. So you’re not alone, and you don’t have to justify yourself.

Her fear

What exactly are you afraid of?

Fear of the dentist takes many forms. The more we understand what’s troubling you, the more effectively we can help.

01

Pain and Injections

The worry that it will hurt, or the fear of the shot itself.

02

Loss of control

The feeling of being at the mercy of the chair and not knowing what will happen next.

03

Noises and the gag reflex

The sound of the drill, the smell of the dentist's office, the gag reflex when instruments are in my mouth.

04

Shame

The fear that the condition of their teeth will be judged, and the hurdle of even making the call.

Anxiety or Dental Phobia?

How to Recognize Dental Phobia

According to the AOK health magazine, a dental phobia is likely present if all three of the following apply:

  • Fear goes beyond the actual danger.
  • It lasts longer than six months.
  • Your teeth or gums will suffer permanent damage because you can't go to the dentist.

This is not a substitute for a diagnosis.

Important for Expectations

Fear Is Allowed to Remain

No one has to “get rid of” their fear in order to receive treatment from us. The goal is for you to be able to receive the necessary treatment again, without letting your fear dictate your actions. We do not guarantee that the fear will disappear.

Options

What Helps with Dental Anxiety During Treatment?

Depending on your anxiety and the treatment, there are various options to consider. We’ll discuss which one is right for you together before the first procedure.

Possibility What that means Well-suited for when
Conversation and Stop Signal We explain each step in advance. With an agreed-upon hand signal, we stop immediately. They need, above all, oversight and information.
Gentle Local Anesthesia The area is numbed, before we begin. Her fear is focused on pain above all else.
Twilight Sleep You will be deeply relaxed and will barely notice the treatment. Sedation is administered intravenously and is performed at our practice by dentists certified in this procedure. The anxiety is severe, or the treatment takes longer.
General Anesthesia (Intubation Anesthesia) You will be asleep during the procedure. An external anesthesiologist will oversee the anesthesia in cooperation with us. When anxiety is very high or extensive procedures are pending.
What We Don't Offer

We do not offer nitrous oxide.

Twilight Sleep

What is twilight sleep at the dentist?

Twilight sleep is a form of intravenous sedation: You are deeply relaxed, the treatment area is specifically numbed, and you usually remember very little of it.

At our practice, sedation is performed by dentists who are certified in dental intravenous sedation: Dr. Juliane Jager, MSc, Dr. Karsten Wittig, and Dentist Moritz Weiler. They received their certification from the Dr. Mathers Institute, Institute for Dental Sedation, Cologne.

From a technical standpoint, twilight sleep must be distinguished from general anesthesia: Under general anesthesia, consciousness is completely suppressed.

Treatment Process

What happens during the first visit?

The first appointment is a consultation, not a treatment. After that, you decide how to proceed.

1
Step 1

Contact Without a Phone Call

Send us a message via WhatsApp or email. Let us know that you're anxious, so we can set aside more time for you.
2
Step 2

Introductory Meeting

We'll calmly discuss your experiences and wishes. There will be no examination unless you want one.
3
Step 3

Analysis and Plan

We only examine what is necessary, and create a clear treatment plan that outlines the steps and costs. You decide what happens and when.
4
Step 4

Treatment with a Stop Signal

We explain each step in advance. We'll pause immediately when you give us a hand signal. Twilight sleep or general anesthesia available if needed.
5
Step 5

Follow-up Care and Next Appointment

We'll find out how you're doing, and agree on the next step right away, so nothing falls by the wayside.
Costs & Consulting

How much does treatment cost for patients with dental anxiety?

The cost depends on the treatment and on whether sedation or anesthesia is necessary. For more extensive treatments, you will receive a transparent treatment and cost estimate in advance.

Whether a public health insurance plan covers the costs of sedation depends on the individual case and the medical necessity. Please check with your insurance provider in advance.

After many years

What if it's been a long time since your last visit to the dentist?

It's never too late. Many patients don't come in until years later, and we don't judge the condition of your teeth. We look ahead and plan step by step.

Completely renovated

If multiple areas need to be treated, we'll plan the order so that you have as few appointments as possible.

4-quadrant renovation

Teeth Grinding and Jaw Pain

Tension and anxiety often manifest themselves in the jaw. We determine whether a functional disorder is a factor.

Temporomandibular joint treatment

Gentle Methods

Whenever medically appropriate, we opt for the least invasive procedures possible.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Anxiety

Do you treat patients with anxiety in Berlin Mitte?
Yes. At Professor Olze und Kollegen MVZ GmbH in Berlin Mitte, people with dental anxiety are in good hands, even after many years without a dental visit. All the dentists at the practice treat anxious patients. You can see our team further up on this page. We focus on adults.
Do I need to call to make an appointment?
No. You can reach us via WhatsApp or email. If you'd rather call us, please call 030 – 20613869-0.
Can I just talk for now and not receive treatment yet?
Yes, that's how the first appointment is intended: A conversation rather than treatment.
What is a twilight sleep?
Twilight sedation is a form of intravenous sedation: You are deeply relaxed and are barely aware of the treatment, but your consciousness is not completely suppressed, as it is with general anesthesia. At our practice, sedation is administered by dentists who are certified in dental intravenous sedation.
Do you offer nitrous oxide?
No. We do not offer nitrous oxide. Alternatives include counseling, mild sedation, twilight sleep, and, if necessary, general anesthesia.
Do you offer general anesthesia?
Yes. In collaboration with an external anesthesiologist, we offer treatments under intubation anesthesia (ITN). We will discuss in advance whether this is an option for you.
How much does a twilight sleep cost?
The costs depend on the duration, medications, and scope of treatment. Before a scheduled twilight sleep procedure, you will receive a written cost estimate.
Does health insurance cover the costs?
That depends on the individual case and on the medical necessity. Please check with your health insurance provider before undergoing treatment.
I haven't been to the dentist in many years. Is it too late now?
No. You don't have to justify the time. We'll start where you are and plan the next steps together.
How do I stop the treatment if I start to panic?
We'll agree on a hand signal in advance. As soon as you give it, we'll stop. Then we'll decide together whether you need a break or whether we'll continue another day.
Do you also treat children who are afraid of the dentist?
We do not specialize in treating children. Children can quickly develop a fear of the dentist if they are not treated by dentists who specialize in this area. We do not want to allow such fears to develop. Our focus is therefore on adults. In an emergency, we will of course treat children as well.
What should you do if you have a sudden toothache outside of office hours?
You can reach the dental emergency service in Berlin by calling 030 – 89004-333 or visiting kzv-berlin.de.
