Dental implant care at home
Just like natural teeth, implant-supported dentures should also be cleaned thoroughly twice a day - in the morning and evening. You should pay particular attention to cleaning the interdental spaces, as this is where food debris can accumulate and serve as food for bacteria. Depending on your preference, you can clean the spaces between your teeth with either dental floss or interdental brushes. Another particularly precarious area is the gum line around the dental implant, as bacteria can accumulate and multiply here undisturbed. Then there is a risk of inflammation! This is why we recommend that our implant wearers use an electric toothbrush: its bristles can be guided under the gum line at a 45-degree angle, allowing bacteria to be removed particularly effectively.

Professional prophylaxis in the dental practice
This oral hygiene at home is perfectly complemented by regular check-ups and prophylaxis appointments with your dentist. Professional teeth cleaning has proven to be a particularly effective preventive measure. During this deep cleaning, a specially trained prophylaxis specialist removes plaque and bacteria from between the teeth and under the gum line. Even hard-to-reach areas in the mouth can be thoroughly cleaned, which makes this procedure particularly recommended for implant patients. Another advantage of regular appointments with the dentist is that any dental and oral diseases can be detected and treated in good time.
Danger for dental implants: Peri-implantitis
Peri-implantitis is the disease that is most frequently responsible for the loss of dental implants. It is similar to periodontitis: the soft tissue surrounding the dental implant becomes inflamed due to accumulated bacteria. If this inflammation remains untreated, it can migrate along the artificial tooth root deep into the jawbone, causing the jawbone to break down. If the bone recedes, the implant loses its firm hold and can be lost.
